Quinta das Carvalhas is the hillside you stare at from the Pinhão quay: more than three kilometers of Douro riverbank on the south side of the iron bridge, terraced from the water almost to the hilltop. Most visitors meet it twice in one morning, first from a rabelo boat sliding past its vines, then in its wine shop with a glass of Port. This guide covers how to book that pairing, what each option includes, and the other boat trips that leave from the same quay.

The estate across the bridge
Carvalhas belongs to Real Companhia Velha, the Port house founded in 1756, and it is the company’s most important property. Written records of the vineyard go back to 1759. The Silva Reis family has owned it since 1953, when Manuel da Silva Reis bought the firm that held it; the Port bottler Miguel de Sousa Guedes had bought the estate in 1881 and replanted it after phylloxera.
The numbers explain why the hill looks the way it does. There are 134.5 hectares of vines, planted between 80 and 500 meters above the river on gradients of 40 to 70 percent, most of them on terraces or narrow micro-terraces. Almost 38 hectares are old field blends, some of them a century old, with more than twenty native grapes growing side by side. The rest is planted by variety, led by Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca. It all sits in the Cima Corgo, the heart of the Alto Douro Wine Region that UNESCO listed in 2001.
For a visitor that means two things. The views from the boat are mostly of Carvalhas and its neighbors, and the tasting at the end of a boat trip is a short walk away rather than a drive.
How we chose these Quinta das Carvalhas visits
We started from the estate’s own program and then read every listing on GetYourGuide and Viator that leaves from Pinhão and either stops at Quinta das Carvalhas or sails past it. Three rules cut the field to the five below:
The boat leaves from Pinhão. Full-day trips from Porto that include a short cruise are a different purchase, and we cover them in our guide to Douro Valley wine tours from Porto. The listing says what is poured. Where a boat trip includes no Port, we say so and point you to the quinta’s shop. One product per operator and route. Two operators sell several near-identical rabelo trips; we kept the clearest of each.
The order is not a ranking. It runs from the quinta itself, to the one combined booking, to the boat-only trips you can pair with a tasting on your own.
Booking Quinta das Carvalhas directly
1. Quinta das Carvalhas Vineyard Guided Tour
The estate runs its own visits, and the Vineyard Guided Tour is the one we would book first. It is a guided walk through the vineyard with someone who explains the work on the terraces, followed by a tasting at the quinta. It is the only option here where you actually go up into the vines rather than look at them from the water.
It starts at 10:00, which leaves the afternoon free for a boat. If you want more, the estate offers an upgrade called A Ruin with a View, with the tasting moved to a partly restored stone ruin turned open-air room, and a private Vintage Tour with Álvaro Martinho, the estate’s viticultural manager, priced for small groups. Without a guided visit you can still taste by the glass at the wine shop, and from May to September an open-top minibus climbs the estate to the round house with two Reserve Ports at the end. Details and the booking form are on the Real Companhia Velha site.

2. Rabelo Boat Cruise With a Port Tasting at Quinta das Carvalhas
This is the only listing we found that sells the whole pairing as one ticket. You board a traditional rabelo at the Pinhão quay, sail upstream toward Romaneira for an hour with an audio guide, then walk back across the iron bridge to Quinta das Carvalhas for a tasting of four Ports. The listing is honest that the walk is on your own: about ten minutes, unguided.
The catch is the reviews: only 15, averaging well below the boat-only trips further down. At least one reviewer expected table wine and got Port. If Port is what you came for, it does what it says. If you would rather choose your own boat and your own tasting, booking the two separately gives you more departures.

Rabelo boat trips from the Pinhão quay
If you book the boat on its own, the choice is mostly about length. One hour takes you upstream past Bomfim, Romaneira and Carvalhas and back. Two hours reaches the mouth of the Tua and the dam above it. Every operator below starts within a few minutes’ walk of the bridge, so a Carvalhas tasting slots in before or after any of them.
3. One-Hour Traditional Rabelo Boat Tour
Magnifico Douro runs its rabelos from its own pier beside the iron bridge, and this is its short loop: an hour on the river, with commentary through a phone app in five languages. With more than 800 reviews it is one of the most reviewed boat trips in Pinhão, so expect full departures in summer.
The listing doesn’t promise a Port tasting, and that is the point of pairing it with the quinta: an hour on the water, a ten-minute walk, and a glass of Carvalhas Port with the hill you just sailed past in front of you. The operator sells a two-hour version up to the Tua for those who want more river.

4. Two-Hour Rabelo Boat Tour With Port Wine
The longer trip earns its time past the point where the one-hour boats turn back. After Carvalhas and Romaneira the river runs on toward the Tua, with Ventozelo and the Foz Tua dam along the way, and the Port is poured on board. It is the better choice if the boat is the main event of your day rather than a prelude to a tasting.
Fewer people have reviewed it, so the rating rests on a small base. The audio guide covers the same five languages as the others. If you add a Carvalhas tasting afterward, book the shop visit for the afternoon, since you will be back on the quay close to two hours after you leave.

5. Douro River 50-Minute Boat Trip With Port Wine
Douro.Tours sells the shortest trip here, with a live guide or an audio guide on board. The route runs past Roêda, Romaneira and Carvalhas, and a glass of Port is included, which makes it the cheapest way to have both the river and a taste in under an hour.
The rating is the strongest of the boat-only trips, on a solid number of reviews. The operator asks you to be at its kiosk half an hour before departure, so the real time commitment is closer to ninety minutes. Pair it with the Vineyard Guided Tour and you have a full Carvalhas morning that ends in time for lunch in Pinhão.

Booking, timing and getting there
Getting to Pinhão. The Douro line from Porto stops at Pinhão, a few minutes’ walk from the quay, so you can do the whole day without a car. By road the last stretch is the N222 from Régua, 27 slow kilometers along the river. If you drive, remember that a boat with Port and a tasting add up: Portugal’s limit is 0.5 g/l, and lower for new drivers. Our guide to renting a car for a wine trip covers the rest.
Wine shop hours. The Carvalhas shop is open daily from 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 19:00 in spring and summer, and 14:00 to 18:00 in autumn and winter. It closes on December 24–25 and January 1–2. Guided visits and the walking trails need a booking; the minibus runs Tuesday to Sunday from May to September and by booking only the rest of the year.
When to go. September and early October bring the harvest and the busiest boats. Late spring is greener, quieter and still warm enough to sit on deck. In high summer, book the first boat of the day: the valley traps heat by early afternoon.
Shipping bottles home. The shop sells the estate’s wines and Ports by the bottle. Read our guide to shipping wine home to the US before you buy a case. For background on the Port categories you will taste, the Port and Douro Wines Institute publishes the rules.
Where this fits in a Douro trip
A Carvalhas morning is easiest from a base in or near Pinhão. Our guide to where to stay in the Douro Valley lists the quintas with rooms within reach of the quay, and the Douro Valley wine country guide explains how the Cima Corgo compares with the rest of the valley.
If you only have a day from Porto, a guided tour that includes a Pinhão cruise is the simpler choice. If you want more time on the water than an hour, our guide to Douro river cruises covers the full-day and multi-day options.
