Rioja Wine Harvest Festival 2026: Seven Days in Logroño

The Rioja wine harvest festival filled Logroño for seven days in September 2026, and almost none of it happened in a winery. The grape treading is a civic ceremony held in a city park, the wine fountain runs on a street corner, and the fireworks are scored as a competition. Here is what the week contained, what the vintage behind it looked like, and how to plan for the next edition.

What the Rioja wine harvest festival is

Two festivals share the same week in Logroño. The Fiestas de San Mateo are the city’s patron saint celebrations, built around the feast day of September 21. The Fiesta de la Vendimia Riojana, which reached its 69th edition in 2026, is the harvest festival proper: a civic thanksgiving for the vintage that has just come in.

That distinction matters more than it sounds. This is not a wine fair. Nobody pours from a stand with a price list, there is no catalogue of exhibiting bodegas, and the wineries themselves are busy pressing fruit thirty kilometres away. What Logroño stages instead is a week of ceremony and street programme, with wine as the reason for all of it rather than the product on sale.

The central rite is the grape treading. A wooden lagar is set up on El Espolón, the broad promenade that runs through the middle of the city, grapes are crushed by foot, and the first must of the vintage is offered to the Virgen de Valvanera, patron of La Rioja. It takes place at noon on September 21 and it is the one fixture of the week that has nothing to do with entertainment.

Behind the ceremony sits a working region of real scale. The Consejo Regulador of DOCa Rioja counts 66,405 hectares of vineyard across 144 municipalities in La Rioja, the Basque Country and Navarra, farmed by roughly 13,000 growers and turned into wine by about 600 bodegas. Logroño is the administrative capital of that, which is why the offering happens here and not in one of the wine villages.

Rioja wine harvest festival 2026: the official programme

The city published more than 350 separate acts for 2026, spread across neighbourhoods rather than concentrated in the old town. These were the fixed points of the week.

The opening rocket was deliberately put on a Saturday morning. The city said it wanted the start of the week to fall on a weekend so that residents could be there for it, and the effect on a visitor is the same: the busiest and best attended day of the whole programme is the first one.

What the week actually looks like

The spine of it is the peñas, the neighbourhood clubs that run the fiesta from the inside. In 2026 the city gave them a dedicated site, Espacio Peñas 2.0, in the Valbuena car park, with more than fifty music performances across the week. It is free, it is loud, and it is where the festival stops being a programme of events and becomes a party that happens to have a programme.

The Concurso de Calderas is the other thing worth arranging your day around. Teams cook a single pot over a fire in the street, judged on the day, and in 2026 the competition was expanded to 150 groups with registration moved online. It is a cooking contest in form and a street lunch in practice.

Then there are the fireworks. Four of the seven nights are given to an international competition in Parque de la Ribera, down by the Ebro, starting at eleven. Competition fireworks are a different thing from a municipal display: each company gets its own night and is scored against the others, so the shows are long and the crowd takes them seriously.

Good to know

  • Cost: The street programme, the treading, the peñas site and the fireworks are all free
  • Booking: Not needed for any of the open-air programme
  • Without a car: Everything above is walkable from central Logroño
  • Language: The official programme is published in Spanish only

The 2026 vintage behind the festival

The 2026 harvest in Rioja was the earliest the region has on record. Picking opened in the first days of August, and by September 12, a week before the festival began, 185.1 million kilos of fruit had already come in: 146.8 million of red grapes and 38.3 million of white.

Alejandra Rubio, technical director of the Consejo Regulador, put the optimism down to the health of the fruit and the shape of the weather, sunny mornings against much colder nights, and said the region expected a great vintage. For scale, 2025 brought in 225.4 million kilos and 155 million litres of wine, itself 18 per cent down on the year before.

There is a practical consequence for anyone who books this week hoping to see a harvest. By the time the rocket went up on September 19, most of Rioja had been picking for six weeks. You arrive to cellars in the middle of fermentation, not to vineyards full of pickers. If the vineyard is what you want to see, in a year like this one you need to be here in August.

Harvest figures and prices on this page were read on October 1, 2026.

Where to stay for the Rioja wine harvest festival

Logroño is a city of modest size holding its biggest week of the year, and it sits in the middle of harvest, when cellar staff and pickers are also looking for beds. This is the tightest week in the Rioja calendar for rooms, and the sensible plan is to book it as far out as you can.

Stay central. The whole programme is on foot, the treading is on El Espolón, the fountain is two streets away, and the fireworks finish near midnight on the far side of the river. A hotel twenty minutes out turns every one of those into a logistical decision.

We are not quoting rates here, because the 2027 dates are not out and a price attached to the wrong week is worse than no price. The search above is set to a sample week in late September 2027 so that you can see the range the city runs at, and you can move the dates once the programme is published.

If you would rather sleep in the vineyards and come into the city for the days that matter, Haro is the other obvious base: the wine capital of Rioja Alta, with the barrio de la estación bodegas inside walking distance of each other. Our round-up of bodegas with rooms in Rioja covers the estates that put guests among the vines rather than in town.

What else to do in Rioja that week

The bodegas do not close for the fiesta, and visiting one is the part of the trip the festival itself will not give you. On October 1, 2026 there were 66 wine tasting and winery activities listed for La Rioja on GetYourGuide, from short cellar visits to full days out of Bilbao and San Sebastián.

Two are worth knowing about if you are based in the city. A guided visit with a tasting of three wines at Viña Ijalba, inside Logroño itself, runs an hour and a quarter from $28 a person. In Haro, an hour and a half at CVNE starts at $34. Prices are indicative and set by our booking partners.

For something built around the week rather than around a tasting room, our guide to Rioja barrel dinners covers the underground meals served in the rock-cut calados, which are at their best in autumn. The wider picture of the three subzones, when to come and how to move between them is in our Rioja wine country guide. The regional tourist board’s own wine tourism listings are a useful cross-check on opening hours in September, when many estates change them without notice.

The next Rioja wine harvest festival: what we know

San Mateo falls on September 21, and Logroño builds the week around that date. In 2026 the city chose Saturday the 19th for the opening rocket so that the start landed on a weekend, after consulting the peñas, the regional houses and the neighbourhood associations.

The dates for the next edition had not been published when this page was written, so we are not going to print them. What we can say is that the festival sits in the second half of September, that the weekend placement of the opening is a choice the city makes each year, and that the programme usually appears in late summer. If you are planning around it, hold a week in the back half of September and expect the exact days to move.

One thing the 2026 edition settled: come for the festival and the city, and treat the vineyards as a separate decision. In a year when picking starts in the first week of August, a late September visit is a harvest festival rather than a harvest.
